Pocket Pets, Birds, & Exotics

We know that best friends come in all shapes and sizes and that’s why in addition to dogs and cats, our own Dr. Joy Neely can provide comprehensive care for small mammals (known as “pocket pets”) as well as some birds and reptiles.

Pocket Pets

These little buddies are fun companions but do require regular care and attention to be healthy. They can also carry disease, so you must be aware of proper handling and hygiene. Dr. Neely can examine and treat all kinds of small mammals, including:

  • Ferrets
  • Rabbits
  • Gerbils/Hamsters
  • Mice/Rats
  • Sugar Gliders
  • Hedgehogs
  • Chinchillas

Most illnesses in these pets are a result of incorrect care, so having a veterinarian to help you maintain the health of your pet is essential. Once you adopt your pet, schedule a wellness exam so that we can be your resource for learning how to properly care for, feed, and identify problems in the animal.

Avian Care

While we cannot provide care for large pet birds such as macaws or Amazons, Dr. Neely is happy to see and treat small birds as well as chickens and ducks.

Birds are very good at hiding signs of illness or injury, don’t let them fool you! At a minimum, they should see the veterinarian annually to:

  • check body condition and weight
  • inspect skin and feathering
  • examine eyes, ears, nose, and throat
  • listen to heart, lungs and airsacs
  • discuss diet and socialization
  • test alertness

We may also recommend routine testing for parasites, inflammation, bacterial infections, anemia, nutritional health, immune system function, and disease.

Exotic Pets (Reptiles)

Many of these pets require a very particular environment to thrive, and it’s important you have a veterinarian experienced in their care to help. Dr. Neely can provide comprehensive care for reptiles including:

  • Small, non-venomous snakes
  • Turtles/Tortoises
  • Lizards
  • Iguanas
  • Geckos
  • Chameleons
  • Bearded Dragons

We see a wide variety of animals, so if your companion is something smaller—or a little more exotic—than a cat or dog, don’t hesitate to book a visit online or call us at (903) 617-6891.
