Sago Palm plant can be fatal to pets

TYLER, Texas – A common home landscaping plant can be fatal to your pet. The Sago Palm is often used for decoration.

“They’re an attractive plant usually around the pool and landscaping and all, so they’re pretty popular nowadays and a lot of people aren’t aware that they are toxic to dogs and cats,” Dr. Laura Cauthen, owner of Animal Medical Center of Tyler, said.

The plant contains toxins that cause liver failure in dogs and cats. The process is rapid and can kill your pet within a week of being ingested.

“It’s a very very quick process and they can be dead in 2 to 3 days umm without intervention medical medically it’s a very high fatality rate even with treatment 30 to 40 percent of them we aren’t able to save,” Dr. Cauthen, said.

It is important to monitor the activity of your pet if around a sago palm is around your home and seek medical attention if ingested.
